About Us

We are a lively, contemporary, diverse congregation serving greater Hartford.

Our Mission

As a growing, evolving, spiritual community inspired by our denominational values, we commit ourselves to:

  • Nurture our needs for personal spiritual growth, inspirational worship and a mutually caring community
  • Devote ourselves to religious learning for all ages
  • Embrace human diversity by welcoming individuals and families of all kinds
  • Join with the larger community to promote love, justice and service to society

Toward these ends we pledge our talents, energies and resources.

How we put the Seven UU Principles into action

Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote these principles:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person

  • We are a “welcoming congregation,” welcoming all people regardless of sexual orientation and gender identities.
  • We have made USH more accessible to those with physical limitations with an elevator, pew cuts to accommodate wheelchairs and chairs, a lift to the chancel, an automatic door for building access, increased handicapped parking, large-print hymnals and personal hearing devices.
  •  We are seeking ways to be more supportive to people with mental health conditions.

Justice, equity and compassion in human relations

  • Our active network of volunteers [link to Caring Network] provides support to those in need.

Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations

  • We celebrate various religious traditions, such as Seder and Kwanzaa.
  • We feature a candle-lighting ritual during our worship service.

A free and responsible search for truth and meaning

  • We offer a Small Group Ministry program, in which people discuss topics that explore the spiritual dimensions of each individual’s life.

The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large

  • We have structured our governance body to make decisions democratically.

The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all

  • We have an active Social Justice Council, which includes CUREJ (Congregations United for Racial Equity and Justice) and ICEJ (Interreligious Coalition for Equity and Justice).

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part

  • We have installed environmentally-friendly furnaces and use the most efficient form of lighting wherever possible.
